Pre-existing conditions
2 year rule

If your pet has had no vet treatment or advice for a condition for any continuous 24-month period, we can still cover it, even if the condition first appeared before your policy started. This is assessed throughout the life of your policy, not only when it begins.

A note on renewal prices. As pets age they tend to need more vet visits, so renewal prices typically rise each year. From age 5 for dogs and 7 for cats, a 15% co-payment applies alongside your excess. We'd rather you knew that upfront than find it buried in the wording.

What's included as standard

Every Select & Protect pet policy comes with these as part of the price, not an upgrade.

24/7 Vet Assist

Speak to qualified UK based vets and vet nurses about your pet's care, behaviour and nutrition, any time, day or night, at no extra cost with Select & Protect Vet Assist.

Lifetime cover

Ongoing conditions stay covered year after year, as long as you renew without a break and continue to meet the policy terms.

Hassle free claims

Your vet can often claim directly from us, so you're not left covering the bill upfront.

Vet Assist

Advice from vets and vet nurses, any time you need it

Included with every policy at no extra cost. Once you're insured, you can speak to a qualified vet nurse or vet about care, behaviour or nutrition, by phone or video, whether you're at home or abroad.

What isn't covered

Every policy has its limits. These are the main things a pet policy doesn't cover, so there are no surprises if you need to claim.

  • Pre-existing conditions, unless your pet has had no veterinary treatment or advice for that condition for any continuous 24-month period, under our 2 year rule.
  • Illness in the first 14 days and injuries in the first 48 hours of a new policy, known as the waiting period.
  • Routine, preventative or elective treatment, such as vaccinations, teeth cleaning, neutering or spaying, grooming and nail clipping.
  • Pregnancy, breeding and delivery, and any complications arising from them.
  • Treatment or medication that has not been prescribed or recommended by a vet.
  • Anything above the cover limits set out in the table of benefits.

This is a summary of the main exclusions, not a full list. The complete terms, limits and exclusions, including the age limits that apply when a policy first starts, are set out in the policy wording.

Before you take out a policy

A few things worth knowing upfront, not buried in the wording.

  • Pre-existing injuries and illnesses are not covered, unless they meet the 2 year rule above.
  • Exclusion periods for injury and illness apply from the start of your policy unless we have agreed to waive these waiting periods.
  • Cover limits, excess, terms, conditions and exclusions apply. See the policy wording for full detail.

Common questions

The things people usually ask before they buy, answered here rather than behind another click.

How do I pay for my pet insurance?

By monthly Direct Debit, so the cost is spread across the year rather than paid as a single lump sum. We don't currently offer an annual payment option.

Can you cover a condition my pet has already had?

If your pet has had no vet treatment or advice for a condition for any continuous 24-month period, we can still cover it, even if the condition first appeared before your policy started. This is assessed throughout the life of your policy, not only when it begins.

Are there any breeds you don't cover?

Yes, a small number of breeds fall outside what we're able to cover. The full list is set out above in Before you take out a policy.

Can I insure more than one pet?

Yes, you can cover up to six pets on one household policy, with the level of cover set individually for each one and everything managed in one place.
